The common large Buteo of Peru. Variable Hawk includes “Red-backed Hawk” and “Puna Hawk” which were formerly regarded as separate species. We saw Variable Hawks at Chaparri, Abra Barro Negro and Abra de Porculla (where it was most common with 12+ seen).

One responded very aggressively to unsolicited playback in a spot favoured by this species in previous years on the Abra Patricia road on 22nd. It showed very well and rounded off a good day with Crimson-bellied Woodpecker in the same patch of forest!

Birds of the race peruviana were very vocal near Abra Barro Negro but only one of them showed, albeit well and at close quarters.

Recorded on 6 dates in Andean scrub and forest.
Dark-breasted Spinetail Synallaxis albigularis
Heard at Afluente.
Maranon Spinetail Synallaxis maranonica
Always a trick customer this one. We eventually saw one or two scurrying around in the leaf litter at Tamborapa on 19th. At least 5 seen. ENDEMIC.
Rufous Spinetail Synallaxis unirufa
Heard on 20th and seen the next day at Abra Patricia.
Necklaced Spinetail Synallaxis stictothorax
Quite common at Bosque Pomac on 15th and heard at Chaparri over the next few days. Birds of the endemic race chinchipensis (“Chinchipe Spinetail” for some authorities) were seen well at Tamborapa on 19th.
Line-cheeked Spinetail Cranioleuca antisiensis
A pair of the “northern” nominate group were well seen at Abra de Porculla on 18th. Birds of the larger “southern” baroni group (“Baron’s Spinetail for some authorities) were quite common during the latter part of the tour in the Utcubamba Valley, near Leimebamba and between Celendin and Cajamarca. The latter form would be endemic to Peru if elevated to species level.

Seen well above Afluente on 23rd with 3 birds joining the flocks there.
Streak-throated Canastero Asthenes humilis
One in the Paramo between Cruz Conga and Cajamarca on 26th.
Many-striped Canastero Asthenes flammulata
Seen well near Abra Barro Negro and near Cruz Conga.
Great Spinetail Siptornopsis hypochondriacus
We could not have hoped for better views of this rare bird. The soft contact calls of this species were heard almost immediately as we arrived at our site near San Marcos. Minutes later we were watching a group of 3 birds in the ‘scopes only 20 metres away! Superb. ENDEMIC.
Common Thornbird Phacellodomus rufifrons
A couple of pairs near Jaen on 18th and the next day at Tamborapa.
Chestnut-backed Thornbird Phacellodomus dorsalis
We heard this species on 24th as we descended from Abra Barro Negro to Balsas but they would not show despite the close proximity of the nests. The following day we obtained good views of one near Hacienda El Limon and others were heard on the hillsides too. ENDEMIC.
Russet-mantled Softtail Thripophaga berlepschi
Despite rampant deforestation in the area this rare bird continues to survive below Abra Barro Negro. We saw a fairly responsive (to playback) bird in a small bird flock there on 21st. ENDEMIC.
Equatorial Graytail Xenerpestes singularis
Once the rain stopped at Afluente we encountered some very good bird flocks near the road. This species could be heard constantly at one point but did not show at all well, giving only fleeting glimpses.
Pearled Treerunner Margarornis squamiger
Seen in fairly good numbers at Abra Patricia and Abra Barro Negro.
Streaked Tuftedcheek Pseudocolpates boissoneauti
This striking bird was seen well at Abra Patricia and Abra Barro Negro.
Rufous-necked Foliage-Gleaner Syndactyla ruficollis
Two, maybe 3 birds seen at Abra de Porculla on 18th. One bird observed carrying food and plainly nesting in an area of remnant cloud forest and scrub near the path. Best views ever of this range restricted species for the leader.

Fairly common in the coastal belt at Bosque Pomac and Chaparri. A male of the race shumbae seen near Jaen in the desert scrub. The latter form is considered a separate species by some authorities (by virtue of vocal and morphological differences) and documentation is in preparation.

Another of those magic moments on this tour! Absolutely crippling views of one at the edge of roadside scrub early in the morning of 19th at Tamborapa.
