A pair of the “northern” nominate group were well seen at Abra de Porculla on 18th. Birds of the larger “southern” baroni group (“Baron’s Spinetail for some authorities) were quite common during the latter part of the tour in the Utcubamba Valley, near Leimebamba and between Celendin and Cajamarca. The latter form would be endemic to Peru if elevated to species level.

We could not have hoped for better views of this rare bird. The soft contact calls of this species were heard almost immediately as we arrived at our site near San Marcos. Minutes later we were watching a group of 3 birds in the ‘scopes only 20 metres away! Superb. ENDEMIC.

We heard this species on 24th as we descended from Abra Barro Negro to Balsas but they would not show despite the close proximity of the nests. The following day we obtained good views of one near Hacienda El Limon and others were heard on the hillsides too. ENDEMIC.

Despite rampant deforestation in the area this rare bird continues to survive below Abra Barro Negro. We saw a fairly responsive (to playback) bird in a small bird flock there on 21st. ENDEMIC.

Once the rain stopped at Afluente we encountered some very good bird flocks near the road. This species could be heard constantly at one point but did not show at all well, giving only fleeting glimpses.

Sechuran Fox (Lycalopex sechurae) was regularly found near the bungalows at Chaparri.
Mountain Viscacha (Langidium peruanum) was seen in the Maranon Canyon above Balsas.
