Considered by many to be the ultimate birding tour, Manu is our most popular departure. Travelling from Cusco we head down the Manu Road and through the cloud forests to the tropical lowlands. Giant Otters, macaws at a clay-lick, quetzals in cloud forests and even Inca ruins of Machu Picchu are featured in this tour.

Our second Peru departure takes us to the north where the focus is on sought-after birds such as Marvellous Spatuletail, White-winged Guan and three species of inca-finches.

NORTHERN PERU – MARVELLOUS SPATULETAIL & INCA-FINCHES.
14 – 28 June 2008 with Colin Bushell.

The rainforests of the south-eastern corner of Peru in Manu and Tambopata are famous for their immense bird diversity. But quality birding can be had in the north of the country where so many endemic and range-restricted species are available. For so long the 'forbidden land' because of

peruPeru's rather turbulent political past, the northern birding circuit is now considered one of the best birding areas in the country.

Endemic birds take centre stage on this trip with no fewer than 3 of the 5 species of inca-finch (the whole family is endemic to Peru) on this itinerary, the incomparable Marvellous Spatuletail, the rare White-winged Guan and a host of colourful Neotropical birds like Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan and the critically endangered Peruvian Plantcutter. We'll be birding a variety of habitats from coastal deserts, arid forested canyons, cloud forests, paramos and open farmland in search of our birds.

PERU – MANU. 13 – 29 September 2008 with Frank Lambert.

A tour with the best that Peru has to offer: Andean waterfowl and the endemic Bearded Mountaineer near Cusco with superb scenery, displaying Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks, the immense biodiversity of the east slope of the Andean foothills meeting the Amazon and birding in the ancient Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. A good standard of accommodation using some of the best lodges in the area and comfortable hotels.

Peru had a rich cultural life thousands of years before Pizarro turned up in funny clothing. Wander around colonial cities that echo the legacy of Spanish conquistadors, explore the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco, visit the lost city of Machu Picchu and ponder the enigma of the Nazca Lines.

Peru also boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in South America. The beautiful Peruvian Andes issue a siren's call to top-class trekkers. These mountains are also home to squillions of indigenous highlanders, who still speak the ancient tongue of Quechua and live a traditional way of life.(text from the lonely planet guide)
