TOUCAN BIRDING TOURS: ECUADOR 22 January – 4 February 2009.

22 January: Arrival and reception in Quito. Overnight in Hotel Sebastian in Quito.
23 January: Early pick-up from the hotel and transfer to the airport for our flight to Cuenca. On arrival in Cuenca Pablo our local guide for the tour meets us. Check-in at our colonial-style hotel before departing for Cajas NP. Rest of day birding at Las Cajas (3150 – 3500m). Overnight Cuenca.
24 January: Full morning birding at Las Cajas (4000m) with afternoon transfer to Loja. Overnight Loja.
25 January: Full morning birding at Cajanuma NP (2700m). Afternoon travelling to Zamora birding en route (1300 – 1600m) and arriving at Copalinga Lodge late afternoon. Overnight Copalinga.
26 January: Full morning birding Bombuscaro NP (900m). Post-lunch on Old Zamora – Loja Road (1400m). Overnight Copalinga Lodge.
27 January: Full morning Bombuscaro NP (900m). Afternoon birding the road from Copalinga to the National Park.
28 January: Morning birding in Bombuscaro NP and around Copalinga. Afternoon travel to Buenaventura with a late afternoon visit to the hummingbird garden (1100m). Overnight in Buenaventura.
29 January: Early transfer to Umbrellabird Lodge and full day birding the cloud forests of Buenaventura (500 – 1200m). Overnight Umbrellabird Lodge.
30 January: Full day Buenaventura (500 – 1200m). Overnight Umbrellabird Lodge.
31 January: Early birding Buenaventura before leaving Umbrellabird Lodge for Tapichalaca. Birding started at the pass above Yangana (2700m) arriving at Tapichalaca (2400m) late afternoon. Overnight Tapichalaca.
1 February: Full day Tapichalaca (2600m).
2 February: Full day Tapichalaca (2600m).
3 February: Morning at Tapichalaca before leaving for Loja. Overnight Loja.
4 February: Early morning flight Loja – Quito.

Three adults and a juvenile seen on a very wet morning of 30th January at Buenaventura. One of the key birds of the tour.

White-breasted Parakeet Pyrrhura albipectus
Another important bird for this tour. We saw 27 at Bombuscaro on 27th January. Recently discovered in the far north of Peru apparently.

One near Buenaventura on 28th January was the only record.

Quite common in the Bombuscaro NP where 40+ were seen on 4 dates.
