Ecuador is undoubtedly one of South America’s most popular birding destinations. Its attraction has been enhanced with the “antpitta feeding techniques” employed at some localities there and we’ll visit two forest reserves near Mindo where we have a real chance of seeing Jocotoco, Chestnut-naped, Giant, Moustached and Yellow-breasted Antpittas at close range. But this tour is not just about these normally shy forest floor inhabitants.

ECUADOR: The Best of Ecuador – Podocarpus NP and Mindo Valley
Dates TBA
We expect to see many Choco endemics including Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Club-winged Manakin, Toucan Barbet and Moss-backed Tanager in the cloud forests on the west slope of the Andes, an amazing array of hummingbirds (about 50 species possible on this tour) and some Tumbesian endemics like Grey-backed Hawk, Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Blackish-headed Spinetail, Henna-hooded Foliage-Gleaner, Chapman’s Antshrike and White-edged Oriole.
We are not restricted to the west slope of the Andes on this tour though. White-breasted Parakeet, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Lanceolated Monklet, Black-streaked Puffbird and Amazonian Umbrellabird are all possible (and seen on our tour at year) in the upper tropical forests of Bombuscaro. Although we’ll be concentrating on regional specialities we’ll not be ignoring those classic South American species of course with Torrent Duck, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Golden-headed Quetzal and a host of colourful tanagers to be seen during our journey through the Andes of Ecuador.
