brid watching vacation brazilbird watchingbird watching colombiaSimply the best! Colombia has more bird species than any other country but unlike other species-rich Neotropical destinations like Peru, Ecuador and Brazil it has been relatively neglected by birders of late. However many birding groups have visited Colombia in the recent past without incident, all visiting the western and central Andes featured in this tour. Indeed virtually throughout this tour we’ll be staying in reserves in search of many of the exciting endemic birds that make their home in the protected habitat.

ornothology colombiaThe main tour concentrates on the Cauca Valley with some endemic birds found nowhere else in Colombia, visiting the Paramo and cloud forests whereas our extension concentrates on the Santa Marta Mountains, towering out over the Caribbean, jam-packed with birds of restricted range or found nowhere else.

We will see a wide range of Colombian birds, many of them endemic or range-restricted. These include Cauca Guan, Tolima Dove, Bogotá Rail, Bearded Helmetcrest, Brown-banded Antpitta, White-mantled Barbet, Apical Flycatcher, Turquoise Dacnis-Tanager, Purplish-mantled Tanager, Gold-ringed Tanager and of course Multicolored Tanager.

Our extension takes us to Tayrona NP and the Santa Marta Mountains where we’ll bird the dry forests and humid cloud forests for a wide variety of new birds including Blue-knobbed Curassow, Santa Marta Parakeet, Blossomcrown, Santa Marta Toucanet, Santa Marta Antpitta, White-whiskered Spinetail, Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant, Santa Marta Warbler, Yellow-crowned Whitestart, Santa Marta Mountain-Tanager, Golden-winged Sparrow and Santa Marta Brush-Finch. In fact just about anything with “Santa Marta” in the name!

Whilst concentrating our efforts on endemic birds we will of course encounter, and take time to search for many of the other desirable species Colombia offers to birders. These include Velvet-purple Coronet, Empress Brilliant, Barred and Rufous-throated Puffbirds, White-tipped Quetzal, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Golden-breasted Fruiteater, Lance-tailed Manakin, Tody Motmot, Black Solitaire and White-capped Tanager.

General info: Colombia’s back. After decades of civil conflict, Colombia is now safe to visit and travelers are discovering what they’ve been missing. The diversity of the country may astonish you. Modern cities with skyscrapers and nightclubs? Check. Gorgeous Caribbean beaches? Check. Jungle walks and Amazon safaris? Check. Colonial cities, archaeological ruins, high-mountain trekking, whalewatching, coffee plantations, scuba diving, surfing, the list goes on.

No wonder the ‘magic realism’ style of Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez emerged from here – there is a dreamlike quality to Colombia. Here at the equator, with the sun forever overhead, the fecund earth beneath your feet, heart-stopping vistas in every direction and the warmth of the locals putting you at ease – you may find it difficult to leave.
